Winter’s here. The mornings are cold, the trees are bare, and everything feels just a little slower. It’s the season for warm drinks, soft layers, and small comforts.
Still, even in the quiet of winter, our thoughts drift to sun and salt. For us, that place was Necker Island—Sir Richard Branson’s exclusive retreat in the British Virgin Islands.
An Invitation to Necker Island
Experiencing Necker is rare. This 74-acre private island has hosted everyone from Nelson Mandela to Princess Diana. For a few unforgettable days, we got to be part of its story.
Getting there takes effort—a flight through Newark, another to St. Thomas, then a small seven-seater plane to Beef Island, and finally, a boat ride across the waves. When Necker came into view, it didn’t feel over-the-top. Just quietly breathtaking.
Where Luxury Meets Simplicity
We were welcomed by Fitz, the island’s manager, who offered a calm, unhurried orientation—including a reminder that laundry would be handled for us. No piles waiting at home.
Our room, Leha Lo, offered a wraparound ocean view and thoughtful touches like reef-safe sunscreen. A rainbow greeted us on the first morning. The outdoor shower became part of our evening routine. Nothing felt performative. Just considered.
The Great House at the Island’s Centre
Perched at the highest point of the island, the Great House was the natural gathering space. With panoramic views, hammocks, and an infinity pool, it was equal parts inviting and peaceful.
Breakfasts were made to order. Lemon-turmeric-ginger shots became part of the morning rhythm. A tortoise wandered through now and then, and while we skipped the rooftop hot tub, someone was always up there enjoying the sky.
Things to Do (If You Feel Like It)
You could kayak, sail, or paddleboard. But the best part was that you didn’t have to. Nothing was scheduled. Just available.
We wandered by flamingos and spent time with lemurs—surprisingly gentle, surprisingly present. One spontaneous interaction turned into the most memorable moment of the trip.
Meals were just as relaxed. One day, we sat at a crocodile-shaped table by the pool while a sushi boat drifted by. Whimsical, unforced, and quietly joyful.
Sustainability in Practice
Necker isn’t just beautiful—it’s thoughtful. Solar panels and wind turbines power much of the island. The design blends into the environment instead of overshadowing it.
Rebuilt after hurricanes and fires, Necker stands as an example of sustainability meeting resilience. The focus isn’t on extravagance. It’s on balance—and it shows.
Leaving Necker Island with Something More
Every sunset reminded us to slow down. For people used to cities and constant motion, Necker offered stillness. It gave us room to breathe.
We know most won’t get to visit. That’s why we’re sharing—to offer a small window into a place that’s as grounded as it is special.
Because the most unforgettable places don’t always come with fanfare. Sometimes, they’re quiet. Sometimes, they just let you feel.
